  • 1935: Children were anaesthetised with ether using one-size-fits-all equipment before paediatric anaesthesia became a recognized specialty. Betty Lank, a nurse anaesthetist, designed child-sized masks and blood-pressure cuffs and was the first person in the United States to use cyclopropane, an improved anaesthetic. 
  • 1938: Chief Surgical Resident Robert Gross decided to go against his boss’s wishes and perform the first patent ductus arteriosus repair on an August morning in 1938. This daring decision enabled his patient, Lorraine Sweeney, then 7, to become the world’s first survivor of congenital heart surgery.
  • 1939: When it was discovered that Millie couldn’t eat or swallow, she was rushed to Boston Children’s Hospital on the same day she was born. Her mother’s milk drowned her due to a tracheoesophageal fistula in her oesophagus. Millie was the first infant to survive this condition, thanks to surgeon William E. Ladd, who devised a three-step procedure to create Millie’s new oesophagus.
  • 1944: Seizure stigma was unimaginable, but by incorporating social workers and psychologists into treatment teams, William Lennox spearheaded seizure advocacy, treatment, training, and research. Lennox paved the way for better treatment and understanding of these conditions through the Seizure Unit and his groundbreaking epilepsy research.
  • 1948: Sidney Farber was the chief of pathology at Boston Children’s when a leukaemia diagnosis meant death. However, his suspicion that antifolate could be a cure for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia led to the first clinical trials demonstrating that a drug could treat cancer.
  • 1949: The poliovirus multiplied, paving the way for the development of polio vaccines. Weller, Enders, and their colleague Frederick Robbins were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery, which sparked an explosion in vaccine development.
  • 1983: Claudia De Pass spent more time in the hospital than in school as a child due to sickle cell disease. However, she was the first sickle cell patient to be given hydroxyurea. The drug altered her life, as well as the lives of her patients.
  • 2017: Dr. Walsh’s team examined the genomes of nearly 6,000 families, including autism patients, their parents, and siblings, in a 2017 study.
