  • 1995: Invented an ultrasound-guided technique for inserting radioactive seeds into the prostate in order to treat prostate cancer.
  • 2000: Became the first to image the human coronary artery lumen using black blood magnetic resonance imaging (BB-MR). Mount Sinai discovered the same year that HIV-associated nephropathy was caused by HIV-1 infection of kidney epithelial cells.
  • 2004: Mount Sinai discovered the first common gene variant linked to autism in 2004.
  • 2005: The first successful composite tracheal transplant was performed in 2005, using a method developed at Mount Sinai that allows patients to breathe and speak without a tracheotomy.
  • 2006;  the Hospital discovered a gene in the brain called OLIG2 that may be involved in the development of schizophrenia.
  • 2007: Mount Sinai demonstrated why influenza spreads most quickly in the cold, dry air of winter, and demonstrated that it can be spread solely through the air, without coughing, sneezing, or physical contact.
  • 2007: Developed an advanced imaging technique to capture the movement of leukocytes, or white blood cells, microdomains.
  • 2009: A potential link between rare blood cancer and environmental contaminants was discovered.
  • 2011: Discovered the mechanism by which a gene mutation causes Parkinson’s disease.
  • 2012: Five new genetic mutations associated with Crohn’s disease in Jews of Eastern European descent were discovered in collaboration with an international group of colleagues.
